Vendas Novas School
The intervention at the Vendas Novas Primary and Secondary School is seen as an opportunity to rethink not only the school programme, but also the role of the campus as a civic hub and unified learning environment — a new Forum for Learning and Inclusion.
In a site marked by diverse building volumes and typologies — dispersed and disconnected — the proposal introduces a new central linking structure, acting as an organising element that brings cohesion to the entire complex. This new core articulates the various functional areas: the school buildings, the support and training facilities, the sports hall, and the newly proposed covered multi-sports court.
At the same time, the project promotes a comprehensive redefinition of the campus identity, reinforcing the perception of the school as a single entity. The creation of a large central green space — with areas for leisure and social interaction — becomes the heart of the site, encouraging community use and well-being.
In addition to the refurbishment of existing buildings, the proposal includes a network of covered walkways that traverse the campus and connect all the functional clusters around the new green core. These structures ensure universal accessibility and functional continuity, while also creating generous areas of sheltered recreation, responding to both climatic and pedagogical needs.
The intervention is designed to address the challenges of climate transition, reducing urban heat islands and bringing the school closer to nature, while also strengthening the cohesion of the school community.
More than just a functional upgrade, this proposal aims to create an inclusive, sustainable, and community-oriented learning environment — promoting the school as a driver of social and environmental development.
