    Music Studio

    2020

An old industrial printworks in Leiria is converted into a music studio, transforming a two-storey building into a space dedicated to sound creation and experimentation. The project builds upon the existing structure, reinterpreting it through spatial operations that articulate technical functionality with architectural expression.

The main volume houses the rehearsal and recording room — a double-height space, open and resonant. The annex volumes, stacked and positioned laterally, contain support rooms and the control room, all designed according to strict acoustic criteria. Spread across the site are complementary zones — individual rehearsal booths, technical support areas, and outdoor spaces for relaxation.

The project adopts standard, accessible materials, applied with precision. The volumes are clad in aluminised asphalt sheeting, arranged in a shingle-like pattern, forming a continuous skin that both protects and defines each component. Each space is assigned its own colour, function, and identity, reinforcing the programmatic diversity of the complex.

Transitional spaces are treated as active zones, encouraging interaction between musicians and technicians. More than just a functional rehabilitation, this is an architectural device for music, where construction, technology, and atmosphere converge into a new creative hub.
