Fontinha Cowork
Following the removal of the roof and the boundary wall at the rear of an old warehouse, an unexpected discovery was made: a vast, wild rock, embedded in the terrain. What was once interior became exterior, creating a new frontage where previously there was only a back wall. The space was transformed — not only in function, but in its very relationship with the site.
The warehouse now comprises two similar volumes — house and studio — separated by sleeping niches. At the centre, a large timber object organises the whole: it concentrates the services and frees the ends. On either side, two generous, open spaces are dedicated to living and working. The bedrooms, embedded within the structure of the cabinet, occupy a threshold between dwelling and production. They face the courtyard. They contemplate the rock.
Between them, a thick, almost disproportionate arch becomes a minimal yet fundamental gesture: the element that connects the two linear spaces. A portal. A passage.
In this contrast of scales, it is the smallest spaces that acquire the greatest emotional intensity — the recess, the shelter, the nest, the hut.
