    Espenhof Nord

    2020

This project proposes an accessible residential ensemble that integrates with the existing urban fabric while establishing a new centrality. The site's steep topography is addressed through a fully accessible north–south route, linking Fellenbergstraße to Langgrüstraße, and connecting a sequence of open, intimate, public and private outdoor spaces. All entrances, commercial areas and dwellings are designed to be fully accessible or easily adaptable.

The building layout responds to its urban context: two low-rise volumes align with the street fronts, maintaining the existing street profile. At the centre, two taller and more expressive buildings define a continuous green strip that traverses the plot, encouraging typological diversity and a strong sense of community. The ground floor is activated with entrances, shared spaces, a kindergarten and social facilities.

Materially, the buildings rest on a generous and permeable base, characterised by large openings and mixed uses. Above, a ventilated timber façade unifies the complex, interrupted by self-supporting concrete balconies that define each level and provide generous outdoor areas. The addition of slender metal elements and subtle façade inclinations lend the ensemble a refined and lightweight urban expression.
