On a tranquil plot of land, a house rediscovers its place through its own transformation. Once a two-storey dwelling, stacked and inward-looking, it chose to become single-storey. The intervention began with subtraction: the upper volume was demolished, and the existing stone structures were preserved — silent foundations for a new narrative.

The new house rests on a single level, embracing the topography with humility and lightness, as if seeking to disappear into the landscape. Conceived as a weekend retreat, it is stripped of artifice and faithful to the essence of dwelling. Analogue, simple, direct. No intrusive technologies or excessive fittings — only shelter, shade, and time.

The gabled roof, now clad in black tiles, rests upon the structure with the serenity of something that knows its place. The slopes are not merely an exterior expression — they continue within, shaping each space with ceilings that never forget they are also roofs. The gesture is singular: one continuous floor that shelters and connects all the rooms.

Construction draws on local methods: roughcast walls, a visible and assertive timber structure, as if it were a tent anchored to the earth. The house does not impose — it holds to the ground: discreet, firm, rooted. Two porches, to the east and west, extend the house outwards, creating habitable transitions between interior and landscape, shade and light. They are generous gestures that open the dwelling to the climate and the land.

Inside, a corridor meanders through the building. Slightly disproportionate, almost silent, it separates yet also stitches the spaces together — evoking the distant memory of a rural hotel. A continuous movement that sets the rhythm of the house, where dwelling also means walking, seeing, pausing.

More than a house, it is a reconciliation with place. A light shelter built upon the bones of a previous presence — a permanent pause that has chosen restraint as its way of remaining.
