    Cantonal School

    2020

The intervention begins with an existing school characterised by a fragmented and unclear configuration. The proposed extension aims precisely to redefine this condition: a new entrance repositions the complex, marking a gesture of spatial and symbolic reorganisation.

This new entrance takes the form of a portico, defining a loop around a central courtyard. Access is now made via a raised plaza, beneath which sits the car park — freeing the ground level for students and outdoor social interaction.

The new volume adopts an autonomous language: a metallic cube, slightly rotated, functioning as a filter between the existing structure and the new addition. All classrooms are located on the upper floor, while collective spaces — workshops, canteen, common areas — occupy the ground floor, encouraging transparency and continuity with the public realm.

The metal structure is a pragmatic response to the limitations of the local construction sector — reduced manual labour availability, and an increased need for precision and prefabrication. The apparent lightness of the new volume contrasts with the mass of the existing buildings, clearly and functionally repositioning the entire ensemble.
